Causes and Symptoms of Glomerulonephritis

Glomerulonephritis may be caused by specific problems with the body's immune system, but the precise cause of some cases is unknown. The condidtion may be a temporary one and reversible or it may get worse.

Because symptoms develop gradually, the disorder may not be discovered right away. It may be discovered when being examined for an unrelated disorder like hypertension, which can be caused by glomerulonephritis, or it may be discovered during a routine physical examination when a blood test shows an abnormal urinalysis.

The kidneys can be severely damaged before any symptoms appear. The following are the most common symptoms of glomerulonephritis. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue
  • High blood pressure
  • Noticeable swelling of the face, hands, feet, and abdomen
  • Blood and protein in the urine
  • Decreased urine output

The symptoms of glomerulonephritis may resemble other medical conditions or problems. Always consult your physician for a diagnosis.
